Israel: July 4-17, 2017

University of Arizona softball standout Tamara Statman has been chosen to represent Maccabiah USA (Team USA) at the 20th Maccabiah Games to be played next year in Israel. Statman graduated from Scottsdale Horizon.

Statman became the first prep pitcher from Arizona to collect 1,000 strikeouts after the rubber was moved from 40 feet to 43 feet. Her high school coach was former Wildcat Jackie Coburn.

The Maccabiah Games are held in Israel the year following the Olympic Games. Every four years, the best Jewish athletes from throughout the world gather to compete.

“Meshing together sports and faith is one of the greatest experiences that I could have in my young life. Maccabiah USA is helping me fulfill that dream to me,” Statman wrote in a news release.

“Maccabiah USA is providing me that type of catalyst that ultimately culminates in Israel, the Holy Land. This is such a wonderful opportunity and I must not let it go to waste.

Participating in the Maccabiah USA will provide me ways to see how other athletes blend their Jewishness into their sport, as well as their everyday life. I’m not just talking about athletes from the United States, but from around the world. We may all not speak the same language, but we are still all playing the same game with the same 12-inch yellow ball that is attempted to be hit from 43ft away,” she added.
