Football Notes

Former Salpointe lineman Dylan Greenberg (2013) became the first player from Salpointe to take a snap for an SEC team last year and he became the first Lancer to play for an SEC team on scholarship when Kentucky awarded him one prior to his senior season.

Cienega is now 4-0 after only going 4-6 last year. Actually, the Bobcats are on a seven game win streak if you go back to last year.

Buena has lost 15 games in a row.

Eloy Santa Cruz has seven state championships to its name but the last one came in 1990. The Dust Devils went 9-3 last year and the team is 4-0 this year. Santa Cruz has produced four NFL athletes:

Mossy Cade, Texas: Packers (1985-86)
Levi Jones, Arizona State: Bengals, Redskins (2002-09)
Art Malone, Arizona State: Falcons, Eagles (1970-76)
Ben Malone, Arizona State: Dolphins, Redskins (1974-79)

It looks like Tucson might be in the driver’s seat for the 6A Southern Region playoff game. The Badgers (3-2) have Sunnyside (2-3) and Rincon/UHS (1-4) to contend with. The winner of those three teams will take on either Yuma Kofa (4-1) or Yuma Cibola (3-2) in the last week of the season to determine the Southern Region champion.

Desert View (4-0) has been here before. The Jaguars were 3-0 last year but those wins were against teams that went on to finish a combined 6-24. Desert View finished the year 4-6. The four wins for this year have gone against teams with a combined 7-11 record. The Jaguars will need to win at least three more games to make the state playoffs this year so their game against Sunnyside (2-3) on Friday will technically be a playoff game (for both teams).

Sabino may end the regular season with a 9-1 record but there may not be enough power points in the 3A South Region to give them the top spot in the playoffs. The Sabercats may not even make the top three. The South Region and the Metro Region appear to be the weakest regions in the conference.
