Six teams from Southern Arizona competed in the second round of the 4A and 5A baseball playoffs on Monday night. Let’s take a look at each game:

No. 3 Flowing Wells lost to No. 6 Notre Dame 16-8 in the second round of the 5A playoffs taking place at HoHoKam Stadium in Mesa. Juan Pablo Ruedaflores went 5-for-5 for the Caballeros with a double and an RBI and Elian Quintana also had a double. Brock Barkhurst picked up two RBI.

Flowing Wells will face No.7 Buena in a 5A elimination game set for Thursday, May 3 with place and time to be determined.

Buena lost to No, 2 Verrado 7-3 despite coming back from an early 3-0 deficit to tie the game 3-3 in the fifth. Verrado plated four runs in the sixth for the win.

No. 8 Salpointe upset No. 1 Nogales 4-2 in a rematch of the 2017 state championship game. The Lancers will face No. 5 Sunrise Mountain in third-round action on Wednesday night at Tempe Diablo Stadium at 6:30 p.m. and the Apaches will face No. 4 Canyon del Oro in an elimination game on Wednesday night at Amphitheater High School. Game time for that elimination game is set for 6 p.m.

Efrain Cervantes went 2-2 for the Lancers with an RBI and Jose Cornejo recorded a double. Ricky Maytorena went 2-4 for Nogales with two RBI and a double. Sergio Lopez picked up the win for the Lancers. Cornejo doubled home Cervantes in the top of the fourth and Mikey Villa sacrificed Cervantes home on a fly ball in the top of the sixth to make it 2-0 and then Daniel Durazo scored later in the inning to make it 3-0.

Cervantes picked up a sacrifice in the top of the sixth to score Romeo Ballesteros to make it 4-0 but Maytorena knocked in Marcel Bachelier and Luis Rodriguez to cut the lead down to 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Ian Ponce recorded the save to preserve the win.

No. 2 Catalina Foothills beat No. 7 Thunderbird 14-1 in five innings to advance to the 4A third round against No. 3 Seton Catholic on Wednesday night at HoHoKam Stadium in Mesa at 6:30 p.m.

Cole Altherr went 3-3 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the Falcons. Chris Kowalcek had a double and four RBI, Alec Larson went 2-4 with three RBI, Matt Cullen went 3-4 with four RBI and Will Saul picked up the win for the Falcons.

No. 4 Canyon del Oro lost to No. 5 Sunrise Mountain 7-6 and, as mentioned before, the Dorados will play Nogales in an elimination game on Wednesday. Sunrise Mountain led 4-2 after three innings and 7-4 after four but the Dorados cut the lead down to 7-6 on a wild pitch to score Brayden Benavides and an RBI from Andrew Stucky to score Angel Ochoa. The Dorados left two runners on in the bottom of seven, but Sunrise Mountain held on for the win.
