Desert Thunder 16U team goes all way to title game in Flagstaff

The Desert Thunder 16U team has returned from Flagstaff, where it competed in the Cool Pines Beat the Heat tournament and nearly took home the championship last night.

Desert Thunder won three games yesterday leading up to the championship game, in which it lost 9-0 to the Las Vegas Lady Scorpions.

The Scorpions, comprised mostly of high school juniors, mercy-ruled all other opponents yesterday except Desert Thunder, which has players as young as 14-year-old pitcher Julia Holt (an incoming freshman at Salpointe). The Scorpions won their three previous games by scores of 15-0, 17-6 and 11-0.

Desert Thunder went 5-2 overall in the tournament. In yesterday’s action, it beat the Arizona Suncats 3-2, Arizona Sting 4-1 and Arizona A’s Elite 9-5 before facing the Las Vegas Scorpions.

Holt was the winning pitcher against the A’s Elite while also driving in two runs.

The Desert Thunder 16U team, coached by Jorge Campos, is having a fundraiser tomorrow at the Chipotle between 5 and 9 p.m. at 5940 W. Arizona Pavilions Dr., Suite 110, in Marana. Inform the cashier you are supporting the Desert Thunder Campos team and 50 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the team.
