Nogales drops heartbreaker to So. California at Junior West Regional but still alive

JUNIOR BASEBALL WEST REGION

Southern California beat Nogales National 4-3 on Wednesday at the Junior League West Regional taking place in San Jose but the team will have another shot at the championship game with a win on Friday against the winner of Hawaii (3-1) and Northern California (3-1).

Hawaii and Northern California are playing each other on Thursday and the loser will be eliminated. Nogales (2-1) beat Northern California in pool play but did not face Hawaii.

Southern California (4-0) is in the championship game set for Saturday and will need to lose twice to be knocked off.

Nogales took a 2-0 lead on Southern California in the bottom of the first on a 2-run blast from Pablo Araujo but Southern California tied things up in the second. Nogales went back up 3-2 in the third on a sacrifice fly from Saul Soto but Southern California came right back to tie it up 3-3 in the fourth. Southern California scored the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the sixth.

Hatsue Denogean and Roman Bracamonte saw pitching action for Nogales. Nogales was limited to two hits in the game with Araujo picking up both in a 2-for-3 outing at the plate.

LITTLE LEAGUE WEST REGION

The Little League West Regional is set for San Bernardino starting on Aug. 5 and Sunnyside will face Hawaii that opening Sunday.

AMERICAN LEGION WEST REGION

Firebirds Post 7 is set to face Colorado to open up the American Legion West Region Tournament on Wednesday, Aug. 8. The tournament is taking place in Denver from Aug. 8-12.
