New Mexico State pitcher Kayla Green (Cienega) was selected WAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday. Grand Canyon pitcher Brianna Aguilar (Salpointe) earned a spot on the WAC Preseason Team as did Seattle pitcher Andie Larkins (Sahuaro).
University of Arizona diver Delaney Schnell (Tucson) was named Pac-12 Women’s Diver of the Week on Wednesday. Brooks Fail (Catalina Foothills) was the Pac-12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week Nominee from Arizona.
According to the conference, Schnell won all four events she competed in last week as Arizona competed against Stanford and California. The sophomore swept the women’s diving events versus the Cardinal with 314.33 points in the 1-meter and then claimed the 3-meter with a score of 369.23, which is just two points shy of the school record and a personal best. Schnell demonstrated her consistency against the Golden Bears, topping the podium in the 1-meter and 3-meter by scores of 342.45 and 317.10, respectively.
This list will be updated all year in an effort to recognize all former local prep stars who have gone on to achieve either academic and/or athletic awards at the next level. These are not high school awards but collegiate and professional recognitions. NOT CHAMPIONSHIPS. If you are aware of anything I have missed along the way, please let me know.
We recognized 164 athletes in 2018. We have 17athletes recognized this year so far.
