Hannah Whetzel & Austin Bryan earn collegiate recognitions

Austin Bryan (Pima)

Pima pitcher Austin Bryan (Sahuarita) was selected ACCAC Division I Pitcher of the Week after he threw six shutout innings, giving up four hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks, in Pima’s 2-0 win on Saturday. Bryan is 2-0 on the season with a 0.82 ERA. He has thrown 11 innings with 19 strikeouts in two starts.

Hannah Whetzel (UA)

UA distance runner Hannah Whetzel (Catalina Foothills) was named Arizona Student Athlete of the Month. Whetzel looks to graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering this Spring. Whetzel has been named Pac-12 Second-Team All-Academic and hit her personal best marks in the indoors mile at 5:49.32 as well as the outdoors 5,000- meter race with 18:30.62 all back in her 2016 season.

This list will be updated all year in an effort to recognize all former local prep stars who have gone on to achieve either academic and/or athletic awards at the next level. These are not high school awards but collegiate and professional recognitions. NOT CHAMPIONSHIPS. If you are aware of anything I have missed along the way, please let me know.

We recognized 164 athletes in 2018. We have 19 athletes recognized this year so far.
