Answering Question: Did Adia Barnes Get Bonus for Winning WNIT Title?

A few Arizona fans have inquired if coach Adia Barnes earned a bonus for her team winning the WNIT championship last Saturday against Northwestern.

She certainly deserves one after coaching her team to six consecutive wins in the WNIT and working diligently to push for attendance increases after each game at McKale Center.

The sellout crowd of 14,644 that watched Arizona beat Northwestern 56-42 increased the six-game WNIT attendance figure to 45,602.

The answer to whether Barnes earned a bonus for winning the WNIT is … no, according to the five-year, $1.175 million contract she signed in 2016 before her first season as head coach.

In terms of postseason play, athletic performance bonuses in her contract pertain only to the NCAA tournament. She can earn a bonus of $50,000 for a national championship to $15,000 for a Round of 32 appearance. Sweet 16 appearance equals a $20,000 bonus, Elite Eight $25,000 and Final Four $40,000.

She did earn a bonus of $5,000 for reaching at least 20 wins. Her contract calls for a $5,000 bonus if she wins 20 to 24 games. Arizona finished 24-13. If Arizona won one more game she would have got a bonus of $10,000 (the amount paid for 25 wins or more).

Advancing to the NCAA tournament next year and winning at least one game — making the Round of 32 — would increase her base salary 3 percent. A Sweet 16 appearance is a 5 percent increase, Elite Eight 8 percent, Final Four 10 percent and national title 15 percent.Barnes also has bonuses from academic performance (Multi-Year Academic Progress Rate and GPA) ranging from $5,000 to $15,000.

The bonus for winning the Pac-12 regular season title is $15,000 and Pac-12 tournament championship is $5,000.

A final AP Top 25 ranking in the top 10 counts for a $10,000 bonus. Ranked No. 11 to No. 15 would earn her a $5,000 bonus.

Recognition as national coach of the year by AP, WCBA or Naismith is worth a $10,000 bonus.

Barnes’ contract, which runs through the 2020-21 season, can be restructured pending Arizona Board of Regents approval.
