Sabino & Salpointe win baseball titles; Ironwood Ridge pulls out softball championship

Sunrise Mountain ended the regular season 18-0, earning the Mustangs the top-seed in the 5A softball playoffs. The 18 wins included a season-ending sweep of No. 2 Centennial to win the 5A Northwest Region by two full games over the Coyotes so it was easy to see how this was supposed to be the year of the Mustangs but, instead, No. 3 Ironwood Ridge battled through four elimination games to reach the final where the Nighthawks beat No. 2 Centennial 5-2 Monday night at ASU to capture the state championship…

Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014 and he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017 and he has been a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. His own children have won multiple state high school championships and were named to all-state teams. Andy is the Southern Arizona voting member of the Ed Doherty Award, recognizing the top football player in Arizona, and he was named a Local Hero by the Tucson Weekly for 2016.
