Tucker English went 3-for-3 with two home runs, three runs scored, an intentional walk, and he picked up five RBIs to help lead Thornydale past Continental Ranch in Little League action.

“I wasn’t really swinging for the fences,” English said. “They just happened and it was the first time I have ever been intentionally walked. We’ve been practicing everyday for about three weeks so I think we are ready.”

Canyon View (2-0) is the first team from Little League Baseball team to advance to the District 5 Championship Bracket, scheduled to start on Monday, June 24.

Stephen Henderson threw three scoreless innings against Tanque Verde to pick up the win for Sabino Canyon in the late Little League game at Ora Mae Park. Sabino Canyon (2-0) will play Western (1-0) tonight for a shot at the Championship Bracket.

Tanque Verde (0-1) shortstop Jake Johnson was chosen by Gatorade to be at the MLB Home Run Derby on July 8 in Cleveland. Johnson will be assigned to an American League player and it will be his job to make sure that player stays hydrated.

Johnson, the son of Sabino girls volleyball coach Amy Johnson, is a fan of the Cincinnati Reds but his family is waiting with anticipation to see which American League jersey Gatorade will be sending him. His next step, after Little League, is to join the newly formed “Little Aztecs” baseball club according to his father Sean Johnson. Johnson played with current Pima coach Ken Jacome at Rincon.

In other action, Tucson Mountain (2-0) advanced to the 9-11 Softball Championship Series starting this Saturday at Arthur Pack. Western (1-1) and Flowing Wells-Continental (1-1) are playing each other tonight for a shot at Tucson Mountain. The winner of that game will have to beat Tucson Mountain twice in the double-elimination format.

District 8 will host the 9-11 State Softball tournament in Sierra Vista starting on July 16.
