Sunnyside beat Pantano 12-1 Thursday night at Jay Park to win the District 5 Junior League Baseball championship. The State Tournament is scheduled to start on July 13 in Sierra Vista. GAME STORY HERE
In District 5 action from Thursday, Canyon View beat Thornydale 7-2 at Oro Mae Park to advance to the 8-10 State Baseball Tournament to be played in Tempe starting July 12.
Canyon View (4-1) lost to Thornydale 18-15 on Wednesday night to force the “If Game” on Thursday night. Thornydale (5-2) battled through the Elimination Bracket after losing in the open round on July 19.
Thornydale took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first Thursday night on an RBI single from Angel Figueroa, scoring Mason Petty but Canyon View scored two unearned runs in the top of the second and two more in the top of the third to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
Thornydale picked up another run in the bottom of the third on singles from Miguel Lopez and Parker Gilbertson to cut the lead down to 4-2 but Canyon View added another run in the fifth on an RBI from Ryan Tosca, Brayden Schwerin scored on a wild pitch in the sixth and Jack Newman knocked in Quint Curtis for the 7-2 final.

Figueroa got the start for Thornydale and he gave up no earned runs in 4 2/3 innings and he finished with seven strikeouts while giving up no hits. Colton Kintner took over in the fifth inning. Jacob Kellman got the ball for Canyon View and he picked up four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings of work and Tanner Sultan closed out the game. Kellman and Sultan combined to shut down 11 of the last 13 batters they faced.
For Thornydale, Kintner went 2-for-3 while Petty, Lopez, Figueroa, Gilbertson, Cameron Hill and Jace Medford picked up singles. Newman collected the lone hit Canyon View but the team capitalized on seven timely walks combined with four errors.
