Eclectic Café Athletes of the Week: Mackenzie McRee & Maya Benita


Salpointe sophomore golfer Mackenzie McRee and Catalina Foothills senior golfer Maya Benita are the first-ever recipients of the Eclectic Café Athletes of the Week presented by AllSportsTucson.com.

McRee shot a 3-under-par 140 to earn second place at the Ironwood Ridge Nighthawk Invitational this past weekend. Benita took third place with a 2-under 141.

Girls Volleyball, Cross Country, Swim and Dive and Fall Soccer will all get underway in the first week of September. The top athletes in each sport for any given week will earn Eclectic Café Athlete of the Week status.

Athletes can pick up their 11×17 award posters at the Eclectic Café the following Wednesday. All awards will culminate with the Frog & Firkin Fall All-Stars.

Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014 and he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017 and he has been a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. His own children have won multiple state high school championships and were named to all-state teams. Competing in hockey, basketball, baseball and track & field in high school, his unique perspective can only be found here and on AZPreps365.com. Andy is the Southern Arizona voting member of the Ed Doherty Award, recognizing the top football player in Arizona, and he was named a Local Hero by the Tucson Weekly for 2016.
