Desert View has, um, a surge in its backfield to start the season.
Sophomore Serge Gboweiah (last name pronounced “boo-yway” with the “g” silent) was a standout in his first varsity game last Friday in Desert View’s 20-6 win over rival Sunnyside in the Duel in the District at Jaguar Stadiam.
Gboweiah, a lean 5-foot-8 and 175 pounds, rushed for 166 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown to lead Desert View to its third win in the last four games against Sunnyside. He showed his speed, strength and athleticism gaining chunks of yards darting through the line.
In addition to the banner (which was also given to coach Robert Bonillas), Gboweiah will be presented a plaque at Wings Over Broadway (Camino Seco and Broadway) at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
The Jaguars (1-0) face Nogales (1-0) in of the city’s bigger games on Friday night at Jaguar Stadium at 7. Bonillas, a four-year letterman under coach Dick Tomey at Arizona, is a Nogales alum who coached the Apaches for two years to start his head coaching career.
