This Friday’s games mark the start of regional play for most of the local high school football teams.
With the AIA rating system determining playoff berths and seedings for all classifications, the importance of the regional standings are diminished, especially with Class 5A and 6A schools. Region champions for those classifications do not earn automatic bids to the playoffs.
Schools in Class 1A to 4A automatically enter the postseason with regional titles but how they are seeded depends on their rating.
Overall, regional play brings a sense of pride for coaches and their players attempting to top their rivals to reach the top of the standings.
