Arizona Wildcats 2-0 After Beating Santa Clara Behind Sam Thomas’ Bang-the-Drum Performance

Information from the Arizona media relations department contributed to this report:

Arizona outscored Santa Clara 22-6 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Broncos 65-52 on Friday night in front of 4,225 fans in McKale Center.

Arizona coach Adia Barnes mentioned last season she believes the Wildcats can average at least 5,000 fans a game and build from there.

Aari McDonald scored 20 points while Sam Thomas added 17.

Thomas, a junior, shot 7 of 14 from the field and went 3 of 6 from 3-point range as she outscored Santa Clara 8-6 by herself in the fourth quarter. Thomas also had a game-high eight rebounds with four assists. She also blocked three shots.

“I’m so proud of the growth of Sam. She’s looks more comfortable and she’s being aggressive, so I’m so proud of her and I need her to keep doing what she’s doing,” McDonald said.

Dating back to last season when the Wildcats won their last six games to claim the WNIT title, they are on an eight-game winning streak.

They hit the road to Chicago next week. They will play Chicago State on Tuesday with tip-off set for 5 p.m., Tucson time.
