Arizona Wildcats Achieve Best Start in 20 Years

Arizona won its sixth straight game to start the season, beating Montana 77-42 on the road at Missoula, Mont. Four Wildcats finished in double-figures led by Aari McDonald with 19 points.

The Wildcats matched the longest winning streak to start a season since 1999-2000. That team started with a 9-0 record en route to a 25-7 season and an NCAA tournament berth. They advanced to the second round before losing at No. 1 seed Tennessee.

Montana shot only 24.5 percent from the field Sunday while Arizona outrebounded the Lady Griz 46-27. The Wildcats took advantage outscored Montana 42-16 in the paint and shot 52 percent from the field.

Arizona, ranked No. 24 in the Coaches Poll and unranked in the AP Top 25 poll, got out to a 14-0 lead and never led by less than 12 points the rest of the way.

McDonald, Helena Puevo (14), Cate Reese (13) and Sam Thomas (12) were Arizona’s four double-figure scorers. Pueyo’s 14 points is a new career-high for the freshman.

Six Wildcats grabbed at least five rebounds with Reese bringing down a game-high eight.

McDonald also tallied seven rebounds and two steals.

Arizona next plays at home Friday, against UC Riverside at 4 p.m.
