Within a couple of hours on Tuesday, Gallego Intermediate claimed the Sunnyside School District middle school boys basketball and girls soccer championships with dramatic finishes.
The Wildcats have won three straight boys hoops titles and consecutive girls soccer championships.
The boys basketball game at Challenger came down to the last possession with Isaac Ramirez converting a last-second tip-in to give Gallego the 30-29 victory.
Challenger had defeated Gallego twice during the regular season, but the Wildcats rallied in the playoffs with an overtime win over Apollo in the semifinals to set up the rematch with Challenger.
In the girls soccer match, Gallego overcame a 2-0 deficit by scoring three consecutive goals, two by Cristina Conlon.
Faith Cazarez scored the championship-clinching winning goal for the second year in a row.
