Bisabee’s Gabby Lopez reached her 500th point as a freshman with her 25 points in a win over San Manuel last Thursday.
She is a significant reason why Bisbee is 26-1 overall and 11-1 in the 2A East heading into the regional tournament Wednesday at home at 6 p.m. The Pumas are assured a spot in the 2A state playoffs that begin next week.
Putting Lopez’s 500 points in perspective: That’s more than what high-scoring Sahuaro junior forward Alyssa Brown scored in her freshman season with the Cougars. Brown finished with 460 and is now at 1,950 with a shot to become the first player from Southern Arizona — boys or girls — to reach 3,000 points in her career.
Lopez’s performance last week also included 11 steals in each of Bisbee’s wins over Willcox and San Miguel. She had her second triple-double of the season (with steals a factor) with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 11 steals in the win over Willcox.
The performances merit the 5-foot-11 Lopez — the Pumas’ tallest player — with the AllSportsTucson.com Wings Over Broadway Southern Arizona Girls Basketball Player of the Week honor.
Lopez has five games with double-figure steals this season. She recorded her first triple-double in a win over Valley Union on Dec. 18 with 21 points, 15 rebounds and 10 steals.
Her season totals to this point in addition to her 500 points: 149 rebounds, 132 steals and 66 blocked shots. The blocks rank seventh in the AIA season charts for 2A girls basketball.
