The 38th Annual Roskruge Classic, organized by Tucson High School Hall of Famer Dale Lopez, enters Championship Saturday today with the finals of five separate divisions.
On a personal note, I serve on the coaching staff of the Gallego Fourth and Fifth Grade Co-Ed team along with Steven Brantley and Emilio Pepe Bustamante. This is my second year with Gallego assisting with coaching the co-ed team. The experience is a rewarding one, not only coaching our team, but also to see all the kids around Tucson competing and learning about teamwork and achieving goals.
Tucson is considered a basketball town because of the success of the University of Arizona men’s program over the last four decades. For the city to be a true basketball town, we must become more developed with our youth in the sport. That’s why I view coaching at Gallego and taking part in healthy competition with other schools as being extremely valuable.
If we can get our kids on the basketball and volleyball courts, baseball and softball diamonds, football and soccer fields, cross country trails, golf courses, tennis courts, wrestling mats and swimming and diving pools, that only strengthens our community. The same also goes with getting kids into art and music, and studying a craft in a library, for example.
Sounds heavy but the more we as adults are proactive with the development of our kids, the better we all become.
