Playoffs: Sahuarita Girls to Play for first 3A Soccer Championship

No. 8 Sahuarita beat No. 5 Trivium Prep 4-0 Tuesday night to advance to the 3A state championship game schedule for Friday night at 5 p.m. at Williams Field located in Gilbert. The Mustangs (18-3-1) will face No. 3 Gilbert Christian (17-1) in the title match.

Gilbert Christian defeated No. 7 ALA Gilbert North 1-0 in the other semifinal. The Knights are coached by Jay Feeley, former NFL placekicker. Gilbert Christian made it to the quarterfinal round last year and this will be the first time the Knights have made it to the final. The Mustangs also made it to the quarterfinals last year and, like Gilbert Christian, this will be the first time the Mustangs have played for a championship.

Freshman Sam Wright scored two goals and had an assist for Sahuarita, freshman Rylee Arrington had two assists and sophomore Lina Bracamonte finished with three assists. Freshman keeper Hayle Salcido had nine saves.

In other girls soccer action, No. Ironwood Ridge beat No. 2 Campo Verde 1-0 in overtime with freshman Kylie Grimes providing the winning goal. Junior keeper Kelli Suckell put up 17 saves to keep the Nighthawks alive.

No. 4 Cienega fell to No. 5 Notre Dame in PKs (4-2) after a 1-1 tie, No. 6 Sahuaro lost to No. 3 Flagstaff in PKs (5-4) after playing to a 1-1 tie, No. 7 Salpointe knocked off No. 2 Arcadia 2-1 in 4A action, No. 8 Walden Grove took No. 1, Prescott to overtime before losing 3-2 and No. 4 Catalina Foothills run-ruled No. 5 Mingus Union 8-0.

In boys’ basketball, No. 2 Salpointe and No. 3 Catalina Foothills advance to the quarterfinal round and No. 14 Benson lost to No. 19 Morenci 62-58 in the 2A Conference Girls Play-In game.

In other girls basketball playoff action, No. 11 Tanque Verde and No. 6 Buena advance but No. 9 Flowing Wells, No. 11 Cholla, No. 12 Rincon/UHS and No. 16 Sunnyside all lost on Tuesday night.

More soccer and basketball playoff action is scheduled for Wednesday night.
