Bryon Evans, one of the best and most feared tacklers in Arizona history, has been hired to be the head coach at his alma mater South Mountain High School in Phoenix, according to a report in the Arizona Republic.
The Republic reported that Zach Munoz, athletic director for the Phoenix Union High School District, confirmed in an email that Evans has been hired. Evans confirmed the news, but is refraining from commenting until tomorrow.
Evans’ hire means the number of former Arizona football players as active head coaches now totals 11. He is the fourth former Wildcat to become a head coach this offseason following Jay Dobyns (Tanque Verde), Ronnie Palmer (Monterey Peninsula, Calif., Junior College) and Leighton Milton (Hollywood, Calif., High School).
Evans made it well-known that during the recruiting process while playing at South Mountain, nearby ASU did not recruit him, which helped motivate him to excel for Arizona.
Evans became an Associated Press second-team All-American and the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in 1986. He went on to an eight-year career in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles.
He recorded the second-most tackles in Arizona history with 552, trailing Ricky Hunley’s 566.
