Marty Roth, who recently coached Sabino to the 3A state title game, will be the first boys basketball coach at the new Mica Mountain High School that is slated to open this fall at Vail.
Marvin Beckwith, Roth’s assistant at Sabino and the Sabercats’ junior varsity coach, will join Roth at Mica Mountain. Beckwith is also the head coach of the Tucson Spartans club team.
Roth coached six seasons at Sabino and compiled a 105-67 record, including 53-8 in the last two years. Sabino won a region title this season with a 10-0 record.
Jay Campos, Sabino’s assistant principal for athletics, was hired by Mica Mountain in January to be its principal of interscholastics. He messaged me this comment about the hiring of Roth and Beckwith at Mica Mountain:
“Marty Roth and Marvin Beckwith are two coaches of incredible character who care about their players and as a result get the best out of their players! Mica Mountain just got better!”
