Closure of Schools for the Remainder of the Year includes Extracurricular Sports and Activities: AIA Spring Season & Championships are Canceled

Governor Doug Ducey and Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman announced the extension of Arizona school closures through the end of the school year early Monday morning.

The release read:

“In alignment with yesterday’s updated federal guidance, today we are announcing the extension of school closures through the remainder of the school year…”

Already in a state of suspension and unknown, extracurricular sports and activities have also been canceled as part of the effort to stem the pandemic as a result, the AIA spring season and championships have been cancelled.

“This is an unfortunate circumstance for all of our member schools, students and coaches,” said AIA Executive Director David Hines in a release. “We know this decision was a hard one, but one that was necessary to assist in the well-being of everyone across Arizona. We hope everyone stays healthy and focused on what the next chapter will bring.”

The 2020 Champions Gala is still on track but it will be offered online. School administrators and coaches can continue to nominate student-athletes through April 3 at this LINK.
