The banquet was to have been held recently but the players/recipients of the Southern Arizona Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame (NFFCHOF) Awards ceremony were not forgotten.
The 2020 Scholar-Athlete Honorees are:
Tanner Wengert, Marana; Bruno Fina, Salpointe; Damaggio Strevay, Cienega; Todd Stringfellow, Ft. Thomas; Trent Strong, Salpointe; Lucas Basteen, Duncan; Aidan Talucci, Marana; Austin Brooks, CDO; Brian Castellanos, Sabino, Jaden Preston, Ft. Thomas; and William Parker, Catalina Foothills.
The covid-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of the Southern Arizona Chapter’s 23rd Annual National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Awards banquet,” said Rick Gonzales, of the Southern Arizona Chapter of the National Football Foundation. “The 11 Scholar-Athlete Honorees in the Class of 2020 are truly remarkable young men who excelled in the class room, in their community and on the football field. They continue the tradition of outstanding young men who rise to the occasion and are recognized as National Football Foundation High School Scholar-Athletes.”
The mission of the Southern Arizona Chapter of the NFF-CHOF is to promote and develop leadership, character and academic excellence through amateur football. The Southern Arizona Chapter fulfills this mission, in part, by annually selecting graduating senior high school football players as recipients of the prestigious National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Award.
Additionally, each Scholar-Athlete Honoree will receive a $1,000 scholarship to the college or university they will be attending in the fall.
The selection of these eleven outstanding young men is based on stringent criteria focusing on academic scholarship, citizenship and athletic achievement. One of the Honorees will be nominated for the National Football Foundation National High School Scholar-Athlete Award to be presented in December 2020 in conjunction with the 63rd Annual National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Induction Dinner in New York City.
