Buena High School graduate Jaylen McFadden has committed to play basketball at NCAA Division III institution Dean College in Franklin, Mass.
After McFadden missed the first 11 games of the season with an ankle injury suffered in early November, he returned Dec. 20 against Williams Field and Buena went on to win 17 straight games and finished 25-4.
The Colts claimed the 5A South title before defeating Ironwood Ridge in the opening round of the state tournament. Buena was eliminated by Phoenix South Mountain in the quarterfinals.
McFadden came to Buena prior to his junior year after playing his first two years of high school basketball at Wiesbaden High School, a Department of Defense school in Wiesbaden, Germany.
He averaged 12.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 4.4 rebounds in 19 games and was named the 5A South Defensive Player of the Year as well as being a unanimous First-Team All-Region selection.
One of McFadden’s Dean teammates will be 2017 Buena graduate Trai Powell, a starter and captain on the Colts’ 2017 state quarterfinal team.
Powell averaged 9.0 points and 4.4 rebounds for the Bulldogs this past season and shot 39 percent from 3-point range. He played his first two years of college basketball for Jerry Carrillo at Cochise College.
