Former CDO standout Jonathan Walters wins AGA Southern Amateur

Former Canyon del Oro standout Jonathan Walters shot a 3-under-par 141 to win the Arizona Golf Association (AGA) Southern Amateur held at the Golf Club at Dove Mountain this past weekend. Bryan Hoops of Phoenix started the final round four shots back but he carded a 2-under 70 on Sunday to finish with a 1-under 143 and second place behind Walters.

After Canyon del Oro, Walters went on to play for South Mountain and he will be a junior at UNLV when play resumes. Former Catalina Foothills standout Reece Nilsen (Northern Illinois) shot an even 144 to take third and former Sabino standout Eric Rustand came in ninth with a 7-over 151. Former Ironwood Ridge standout Connor Wierman (Occidental) shot a 156 to finish in the top 20.

Tom Sweigart (Del Lago) shot a 5-over 149 to win the Senior Division and Rich Morrison (Gallery Golf Club) won the Legends Division with a 7-over 151. Jeffrey Zieky of Scottsdale shot a bogey on the 18th on Sunday to tie Morrison at 151.

The AGA Women’s State Match Play championship took place at the Desert Mountain Outlaw Course. Former Amphitheater standout No. 2 Jessica Williams (Embry-Riddle) fell to No. 7 Belle Balkan (Cal Baptist) in Round I (23 Holes) of the Championship Flight.

Former Salpointe standout No. 7 Annabelle Huether (Pomona Pitzer) fell to No. 3 Mari Miezwa in the semifinal round of the Championship Flight 2 bracket (8 & 6).
