Arizona Adds New Orleans RB Montrell Johnson Jr. to Class of 2021 Recruits

Montrell Johnson Jr. , a 5-foot-11-inch and 200-pound Class of 2021 running back from New Orleans De La Salle High School, committed to the Arizona football program this morning.

Johnson, rated a 3-star talent by Rivals.com, had 15 scholarship offers. Colorado, Kansas, Vanderbilt and Tennessee were the other Power 5 schools that offered a scholarship.

He is the fourth offensive player to join the list of 13 Class of 2021 prospects who have committed to Kevin Sumlin’s program. He also is the second from New Orleans in the class to pledge to the Wildcats. Kolbe Cage, a linebacker from Holy Cross High School, was the first of the class to commit to the Wildcats on May 5.

Johnson and Cage comprise three of the recruits from Louisiana in the three-year Sumlin era at Arizona. Jabar Triplett is a Class of 2020 linebacker from Baton Rouge who will not play this season for the Wildcats because of a torn Achilles.

“I would describe myself as an elusive and a powerful back,” Johnson told 247Sports. “I can make a defender miss and I can also run through a defender. I feel like this season I did a good job of being a patient runner. I read the hole very efficiently and I was really consistent.”
