Southern Arizona high schools are scheduled to return to the football field Oct. 30 and Nov. 6 after more than two months of a delay because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Local schools are each slated to play six or seven games with the regular season tentatively scheduled to end Dec. 10.
A flex week for games is scheduled Dec. 18 for games to be made up if COVID-19 forces the postponement of games or if the AIA allows Southern Arizona schools to compete for a local championship, according to a local administrator.
The state playoffs for Class 2A to 6A are slated to begin Nov. 27. A school is presently required to play four games to qualify for the playoffs.
Schools that have already started their season — Salpointe, Pusch Ridge and Buena — would play in the state tournament.
By Nov. 27, many of the Tucson teams will have played only three games. Those schools include Catalina, Catalina Foothills, Cholla, Palo Verde, Pueblo, Rincon/University, Sabino, Sahuaro, Santa Rita and Tucson.
A Southern Arizona region meeting will be held Thursday to discuss the possibility of a four-school playoff at the end of the season.
