Catalina Foothills Moves Forward With Football

Catalina Football coach Darius Kelly confirmed via a text message to me tonight that the Falcons are “moving forward” with football this fall after a delay of more than two months because of COVID-19.

The Falcons, who have yet to have contact drills with pads, will not play until a target date of Nov. 13, according to school officials.

The Sunnyside Unified School District — with Desert View and Sunnyside — is the lone district that has not alerted its administrators and coaches that a football season will be played. All other Southern Arizona public school districts are moving forward with football.

TUSD made that determination Friday and the schools in that district started practice with pads today.

Sunnyside’s school board will vote tomorrow at its bi-weekly meeting about whether football and the winter season contact sports — wrestling, soccer and basketball — will be held. According to administrators and coaches, five student-athletes will attend the meeting to voice to the board members why they want their sports to be played.

Here are the proposed tentative schedules for each Southern Arizona school starting Friday with notes (with Sunnyside and Desert View in italics because the Sunnyside Unified School District has yet to announce it is going forward with contact drills and competition):
