San Manuel qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2011 when the team finished 8-3. The last victory in the playoffs for the program came in 2004 under current Amphitheater coach Jorge Mendivil. Though rankings have no bearing at the 1A level, the Miners come into the playoffs this year ranked No. 10 with a 3-1 record.
In 8-man football, teams needed to schedule six games to be playoff eligible and two teams cancelled games with the Miners so the team qualified despite only playing four games. Mogollon is 6-0 and ranked No. 1 and the Mustangs will host San Manuel next Friday.
St. David (5-0) is ranked No. 4 and the Tigers will host Williams (4-1) next Friday.
No. 1 St. David, No. 7 San Simon, No. 8 Desert Christian and No. 10 Valley Union are representing Southern Arizona in the 1A volleyball playoffs slated to start Friday at Coronado High School in Scottsdale.
The 2A to 6A volleyball play-in tournament takes place on Tuesday.
