The 12U Oro Valley Mets are the top-ranked team in Arizona and third nationally according to National Championship Sports (NCS). The local club baseball team actually defeated the No. 2 team in the nation twice last week.
The Mets (9-1) defeated the San Diego Stars Blue 6-5 this past Saturday at the NCS President’s Day Challenge in Mesa and 8-4 on Monday in the championship game of the tournament. Even with the losses, San Diego (13-5) is ranked No. 2 and BPA Black (12-1-1) out of Irvine is No. 1 in the nation.
Angel Figueroa hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to earn tournament MVP honors along with Jayden Payne who stole nine bases.
The Mets are slated to take part in the I-10 Cannonball Express at Jacobs Park in March.

Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014, he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017, a 2019 AZ Education News award winner and he has been a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. He was the first in Arizona to write about high school beach volleyball and high school girls wrestling. His own children have won multiple state high school championships and were named to all-state teams.
