Akinjo to test NBA waters, has three months to decide on future

In what is not a big surprise, Arizona guard James Akinjo said he will be testing the waters for a chance at the NBA.

He will remain unsigned during the process giving him a chance to return for next season.

He said in an Instagram announcement that “coming to the University of Arizona was one of the best decisions of my life.”

Last season after averaging 15.6 points and 5.4 assists per game, Akinjo was named a first team All-Pac-12 team member.

Last season was his one and only year as a Wildcat, having to sit out the prior season after transferring from Georgetown. He was a junior this season and could return to UA as a junior again given the NCAA is not counting the COVID-19 as a year against student-athletes.

If Akinjo decides to remain in the draft it would free up a scholarship. Arizona is at the full 13 scholarships with Akinjo. He has until mid-July to decide what he will do. The NBA draft is July 29.
