Former Arizona All-American guard Mike Bibby is very interested in coming back to help lead the Wildcats back to a national title … just not as a head coach … as an assistant to whomever UA hires.
“I miss the school and I’d love to be part of it,” Bibby said.
Many fans – nationally and locally – would love to see a former UA player from Lute Olson’s era return to be the head coach.
“I think they (UA officials) need to get Coach Olson former players to get the school back on track,” he said. “They should get the late, great Coach Olson players there. You can’t go wrong. There are so many good ones out there.”
He mentioned Luke Walton (Sacramento Kings, head coach), Miles Simon (Lakers, assistant), Josh Pastner (Georgia Tech), Damon Stoudamire (Pacific).
“You have former players who can recruit like myself,” he said. “You have guys who want to get it back on track.”
Stoudamire has been mentioned a number of times.
“You see this trend of schools going for former players,” Bibby said in a telephone interview. “…I’m trying to get my foot in.”
Bibby lives in Phoenix and has recently coached in the G League bubble and has been working/coaching in the G League. He also participated in the NBA assistant coaching program. He played at UA from 1996-98, helping lead UA to a national title in 1997.
