Louie Ramirez, the head coach at Marana High School the last three years, is leaving for an undisclosed coaching opportunity in the Phoenix area in the fall.

Marana posted a letter written by Ramirez on Twitter Friday morning in which he mentioned, “My time at Marana has come to an end, as my family and I venture on a new chapter.”

“Moving forward, I wish nothing but the best for Marana High School as the next coach will have a phenomenal pool of talent to be successful,” Ramirez wrote. “The culture is here and the kids are hungry.”

Ramirez, 28, previously worked as an assistant coach at Tempe Marcos de Niza and Gilbert Mesquite. He is a Mesquite and Arizona State alum.

Ramirez’s resignation means the 2021 season will feature eight coaches at new places in Southern Arizona.

The coaching hires to this point:

Catalina Foothills — Danny Sainz, a nine-year assistant at Sahuaro under Scott McKee.

Cienega — Justin Argraves, coach at Tucson High for 10 years.

Mica Mountain — Pat Nugent left Cienega for Vail School District sister school Mica Mountain, a school that will be in its second year and won’t play a full varsity schedule until 2022.

Sahuarita — Jake Price, longtime Marana and Mountain View assistant.

Tucson High — Richard Sanchez, the dean of Southern Arizona coaches with 21 years at Sunnyside and Santa Rita who is awaiting the formality of TUSD school board approval.

The schools with coaching vacancies to fill are Santa Rita (with Sanchez moving to Tucson High), Marana (following Ramirez’s departure) and Catalina (Chris Barlow has resigned to pursue personal interests).
