St. David is going for the 18th state championship in program history on Saturday and Benson is going for championship number three with the last coming in 1987.
SOFTBALL SEMIFINALS
1A: No. 3 San Manuel 6, No. 2 Bagdad 3
Jazmyne Waddell had two doubles with an RBI at the plate and she struck out 14 batters from the circle to help secure a state final appearance for the first time since 2015, The Miners have nine state championships.
2A: No. 1 Benson 9, No. 4 Round Valley 1
Emily Darwin picked up 10 strikeouts, went 3-4 with a double and RBI and Kayla Sherman went 2-2 with a double and 3 RBI. Benson has five state championships with the last two coming in 2017 and 2018.
3A: No. 1 Sabino 1, No. 4 Empire 0 (15)
Riley Nielson picked up 26 strikeouts with the Sabercats outlasting Empire 1-0 in 15 innings. Nielson had the game-winning RBI on a double that scored Ilianna Armijo. Vanessa Candito had 18 strikeouts for the Ravens.
3A: No. 3 Payson 2, No. 10 Tanque Verde 0
Payson limited Tanque Verde to a single by Paige Brady and Jessica Thompson picked up 8 strikeouts from the circle. The Hawks were ranked No. 29 in 2019 and climbed all the way to a shot at a state final.

Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014, he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017, a 2019 AZ Education News award winner and he has been a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. He was the first in Arizona to write about high school beach volleyball and high school girls wrestling.
