The Tucson Sugar Skulls defeated the Duke City Gladiators 55-35 on the road in late May, a game in which they dominated in all facets, and quarterback Demry Croft earned IFL Offensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts.
Fast forward to the second week in July and Tucson has dropped five straight games, with each loss chipping away at the confidence gained from its lone win of the season in Albuquerque.
Hope may be on the horizon as the Sugar Skulls (1-6) play a rematch game today at 6:05 p.m. at the Tucson Convention Center against the Duke City Gladiators (2-4).
According to what head coach Dixie Wooten told Steve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez on the “Eye on the Ball” podcast, the team is looking for a fresh start to the second half of the regular season.
“What we’re doing is that we’re just trying to call it a second season,” Wooten said. “So we’re starting the second season, game one.”
Wooten went on to explain that it’s the small things and turnovers that have been Tucson’s Achilles heel this season.
“It’s a lot of little things but you know how that goes, if you put a lot of cracks in a house, it will fall on you,” He said. “Every game we’ve lost the turnover battle, except the game we won, and that’s something we have to fix.”
The Sugar Skulls ended its inaugural 2019 regular season with a 7-7 record before losing to the eventual league champion Sioux Falls Storm in the first round of the playoffs, so not all hope is lost in turning this season around, but the light on the horizon is dwindling.
