Canyon View impressive in opening-round win of 8-9-10 state tournament

Canyon View tallied 13 hits, 11 of them singles to keep rallies going, in its 12-3 win over Casa Grande to open the 8-9-10 state tournament at Field of Dreams on Saturday night.

Canyon View (5-0 including the District 5 tournament this postseason) will next play Paradise Valley North on Monday at 7:45 p.m. PVN defeated Lake Havasu 14-2 on Saturday.

Kevin Curtis, a second baseman and pitcher for Canyon View, went 4 for 4 (all of them singles) with a run and three RBIs. He also pitched an effective 3 innings of relief with six strikeouts and one walk while allowing only three hits.

“Kevin’s done really well for us all summer,” Canyon View manager Zak Anderson said. “He’s pitched well and been a consistent hitter. That’s why he’s in the No. 2 spot (in the order). Great attitude and always consistent for us.”

Lucas Runyon and Casey Cooper each went 2 for 3 with a run and RBI and Miles Anderson had a two-run double to fuel Canyon View’s six-run rally in the sixth to pull away.

Luke Newman, Canyon View’s starter, also went 1 for 3 with a run. On the mound, he tallied five strikeouts through 2 1/3 innings. He allowed only one hit and no runs and walked only one batter.

All the spots in Canyon View’s order except one recorded a base hit.

“We’re really pretty lucky to have a pretty good mix of kids who can get a hit pretty much through the lineup,” Zak Anderson said. “We don’t have a real weak spot. We’re not in a situation where we have a bunch of kids towards the bottom of the lineup that can’t move players around.”

After the game was scoreless with Casa Grande for the first two innings, Curtis put Canyon View on the board with an RBI single in the third. He then capped his team’s five-run rally in the fourth with a two-run single.
