Cienega grad Nick Gonzales hits three home runs in Greensboro’s victory

Cienega High School graduate Nick Gonzales, MLB Pipeline’s 67th overall prospect, went 4 for 6 with three home runs, four runs and eight RBIs — all career highs in the minors — in leading High-A Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate Greensboro (N.C.) on Sunday.

Gonzales also tied a career-high with his four hits in the 19-11 win over Asheville.

The performance by the former New Mexico State All-American follows an Aug. 8 game with two home runs, five RBIs and 10 total bases. He also tallied four hits in games on Aug. 13 and Aug. 22.

He has nine multi-hit games this month and 22 this season.

“I think in college I did three home runs. My junior year, maybe my freshman year, I don’t remember but I know I did it in college some time,” Gonzales told MLB.com. “Eight RBIs, I think I did have two grand slams in college my junior year.”

Gonzales, the seventh overall pick taken in the 2020 MLB Draft, is rated the Pirates’ No. 4 prospect by MLB.com.

He is batting .353 in 23 games this month with 10 doubles, one triple, an incredible eight home runs and 21 RBIs.

“I feel better, I’m doing better and everything, but at the same time I’m trying to stay the same whether I’m doing really good or doing really bad. I want to have the same mentality that every at-bat matters, every game matters, and I’m trusting the process,” said Gonzales.
