The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club announced on Monday the recipients of the Week 4 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions, including Willcox junior running back Cristian Pando for his 336-yard rushing performance in a win against San Tan Foothills last week.
The others who earned a nomination medallion were Mountain Pointe junior QB Chris Arviso, Deer Valley junior QB Rudy Gonzales, Apollo sophomore RB Adam Mohammed and Trevor Browne senior QB Alex Rivera.
All five players will receive their medallions at an upcoming school event this week. By earning the medallion, they will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on Dec. 18 in which one athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award.
Details on the top individual performances last week:
Chris Arviso – JR. QB – Mountain Pointe
The junior came up big completing 28 of 36 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns, as well as adding a rushing touchdown as the Pride defeated Brophy 26-23.
Rudy Gonzales – JR. QB – Deer Valley
In the Skyhawks’ 47-35 win over Seton Catholic, Gonzales passed for 378 yards and completed seven TD passes.
Adam Mohammed – SO. RB – Apollo
The sophomore RB scored four total touchdowns, three rushing and a kickoff return, in a 51-7 win over Ironwood.
Cristian Pando – JR. RB – Wilcox
The Cowboys’ junior RB rushed for 336 yards on 32 carries and tallied four touchdowns in a 48-14 win over San Tan Foothills.
Alex Rivera – SR. QB – Trevor Browne
The senior quarterback passed for 306 yards with six touchdowns in the 54-6 rivalry road win over Maryvale.
