Ironwood Ridge wins Southern Arizona Invitational

Ironwood Ridge beat Salpointe 586 to 626 to win the Southern Arizona Invitational held at Dell Urich on Friday and Randolph North on Saturday. Catalina Foothills came in next at 636.

Individually, Salpointe junior Carlos Astiazaran shot a 3-over par 73 on Friday and a 6-under 66 on Saturday to hold off Ironwood Ridge sophomore Brasen Briones 139-142.

The ranking round took place on Friday and teams are preparing for a better ranking with the Division II state playoffs taking place on Oct. 27-28 at the Omni Tucson National Catalina Course. (D-I will take place Nov. 3-4 on the same course).

For Southern Arizona, there are no D-I boys team above the projected cut for state at the moment but Marana senior Nathan Romero is on track to qualify as an individual.

In, D-II, Ironwood Ridge is safe at No. 2, Salpointe is in at No. 9 and Sabino is ranked No. 11. Catalina Foothills is .055 points behind Cactus Shadows for the last automatic qualifying spot. Cactus Shadows took 8th place at the Southern Arizona Invitational.

Sahuarita senior Luis Lopez has the top individual spot and Finn Meister of Catalina Foothills would also be in even if his team does not qualify. Canyon del Oro’s Beckett Carlson has a spot and Nogales senior Diego Medina and Sahuarita senior Braden Boyter are just above the projected cut.

Oct. 23 is the last day for competition for D-II boys.
