CDO sophomore running back Kayden Luke scored on three touchdown runs and junior quarterback Caden Dawes threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score to lead the visiting 12th-seeded Dorados to a 35-21 win over No. 5 Lake Havasu on Friday night.
The Dorados (7-4) will play in the quarterfinal round on Friday at No. 4 Glendale (10-1).
CDO coach Dustin Peace, with only eight seniors on his roster, has coached the Dorados to seven wins in their last eight games after starting 0-3.
The Dorados opened the game at Lake Havasu with a touchdown drive, resulting Dawes completing a 16-yard scoring strike to Daylon Beck.
Lake Havasu answered with a 10-play drive that was capped by a 7-yard run by Isaac Stopke.
CDO increased its lead to 13-7 with 3:10 left in the first half on a 2-yard touchdown run by Luke, who had to sit out the first five games this season as a transfer from Ironwood Ridge.
Lake Havasu took a 14-13 lead into halftime after Austin Heads completed a 72-yard touchdown pass to Brenton Symanski.
CDO again scored on its first possession of the second half on Dawes’ 15-yard touchdown run to retake the lead at 20-14.
Luke’s 7-yard touchdown run and the Dorados’ subsequent 2-point conversion gave the Dorados a 28-14 lead with 9:19 left.
Lake Havasu was a successful on a trick play with receiver Cody Pellaton throwing to Szymanski on a 47-yard play. Tha set up Stopke with a 9-yard touchdown run with 7:40 left.
CDO extended its lead 35-21 on a 14-yard touchdown run by Luke with 2:59 remaining.
Lake Havasu’s last drive ended with a turnover on downs.
