The historically successful season for Desert View came to an end Friday night.
Robert Bonillas’ team finished 10-2 — with the most wins in school history — following Friday night’s 31-13 loss at No. 3 Goodyear Desert Edge (10-2).
Serge Gboweiah ended his career with a touchdown run while compiling 87 yards on 17 carries. Fellow senior Carlos Alvarez gained 45 yards on seven carries and also scored a touchdown run.
Desert View could not recover after falling behind 13-0 early in the first quarter.
Desert Edge, fueled by two touchdown passes from Adryan Lara to Gavin Parks, will play at No. 2 Salpointe (10-2) in the 5A semifinal round on Friday at 7 p.m.
Lara, a Washington State commit, led Desert Edge to a touchdown drive on its first possession on a 34-yard pass to Parks with 3:28 left in the first quarter. The point-after attempt failed and the Scorpions led 6-0.
Immediately into Desert View’s ensuing possession, Desert Edge cornerback Nate Manzanarez returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown to increase the lead to 13-0 with 2:30 remaining in the first quarter.
Oscar Barraza engineered a touchdown drive with two long passes, capped by a 14-yard touchdown run by Gboweiah to cut the lead to 13-7 with 10:42 remaining in the second quarter.
Desert View’s defense stopped Desert Edge short on a fourth-and-8 play, taking over at its 12-yard line with 8:16 left in the half.
The Jaguars later came away unscathed after Desert Edge once again drove inside the Desert View 20 only to miss a 32-yard field goal with 2:40 remaining until halftime.
With fourth-and-4 at its own 37, Desert View turned the ball over on downs with 1:20 left in the half after a pass fell incomplete.
Lara eventually scored on a 4-yard touchdown run with only 32.7 seconds left in the second quarter. The point-after try again failed and Desert Edge took a 19-7 lead into halftime.
Another two long passes by Barraza led to another score for Desert View, which cut the lead to 19-13 with 4:36 left in the third quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Alvarez.
Lara put Desert Edge ahead 25-13 with 3:12 left in the third quarter on his 20-yard touchdown pass to Parks.
Desert View was aided by two defensive penalties to get the ball to the Desert Edge 5 but the Jaguars turned the ball over on downs with 8:27 remaining.
The Jaguars were provided another opportunity after Desert Edge fumbled the ball away at the Desert View 23 with 5:07 left.
But an interception by Desert Edge’s Emilio Varela on a fourth-and-11 play for Desert View with 3:31 left sealed the win.
The Scorpions punctuated the game with a 4-yard touchdown run by Christopher Cordero with 1;33 left.
Barraza completed 9 of 24 passes for 122 yards. Enrique Cancio caught six passes for 60 yards.
Lara completed 14 of 21 pass attempts for 167 yards. He also rushed four times for 26 yards.
Cordero rushed 27 times for 111 yards and Parks had eight catches for 107 yards.
