2022 MLK Basketball Classic running game stories

This is a running game-story post of the games played on Monday at McKale Center in the MLK Classic.

MLK HONOREES

FACES IN THE CROWD

SALPOINTE 66, CHOLLA 42 BOYS

Salpointe defeated Cholla 66-42 behind five players scoring in double figures, led by junior post player Pasha Shemirani’s 13 points. James Smotherman had 12 points and Julian Riesgo and Dillan Baker each had 11. Canyon Torres added 10 points.

Cholla (8-7) was led by Masai Dean Jr. had 22 points to lead the Chargers.

Salpointe took a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Lancers have increased the lead to 24-13 at halftime.

Salpointe was led by Pasha Shemirani’s nine points. Cholla’s Masai Dean Jr. had eight points.

Salpointe is ahead 42-30 going to the fourth quarter.

TUCSON 45, CATALINA FOOTHILLS 33 GIRLS

Tucson High improved to 14-5 overall with the win behind 13 points each from Kalani Dancer and Gabriela Sanchez, who also had 14 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Catalina Foothills, playing without injured forward Reilly Clark (17.8 points and 7.7 rebounds a game), who is out with a broken left arm, was led by 16 points from freshman guard Clara-Mae Hrouch.

Tucson High took a 10-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Badgers are 13-5 overall and Catalina Foothills is 9-2 under first-yead coach T.J. Sanderson. Former Catalina Foothills coach Sue Darling, a former Arizona standout, is sitting courtside watching the Falcons as part of the Coaches for Charity board that is operating the MLK Classic.

The game is tied at 16 with Catalina Foothills rallying late in the second quarter. Melia Graham, a junior guard, made a basket at the buzzer. Freshman guard Clara-Mae Hrouch led the Falcons with seven points. Tucson High’s leading scorer was senior forward Kalani Dancer with six points.

The Badgers scored the first 14 points of the third quarter and went on to take a 31-22 lead in the fourth quarter.

SAHUARO 74, PALO VERDE 62 BOYS

Sahuaro improved to 12-3 overall with the win in the non-region game behind 25 points from junior guard Titus Palmer’s 25 points. Senior guard Ryan Valdez added 14 points and David Campa had 13.

Palo Verde, which is now 10-6, was led by Antonio Martinez’s 21 points. Anthony Valenzuela finished with 16 points.

Sahuaro led the Titans 28-16 after the first quarter.

The Cougars took a 42-34 lead into halftime behind 11 points from senior guard David Campa, who made three 3-pointers in the first half. Senior guard Ryan Valdez added 10 points.

Palo Verde was led by Martinez’s 15 points, including 10 in the second quarter.

Sahuaro continued to maintain a comfortable lead in the third quarter and led 55-46 going into the last period.

FLOWING WELLS 53, PUEBLO 43 GIRLS

Flowing Wells improved to 18-1 overall and Pueblo is 12-7 after the non-region game.

Pueblo led Flowing Wells 10-7 at the end of the first quarter. Cryztal Rodriguez nailed a 3-pointer in the waning seconds for the Warriors.

The Lady Caballeros took a 17-13 lead into halftime behind six points by Leamsi Acuna and five from Nevaeh Urenda.

Urenda wound up leading Flowing Wells with 13 points including two 3-pointers to help turn back the Warriors in the second half.

Acuna and Ayanna DeJesus finished with 10 points each for the Lady Caballeros, who have won 14 consecutive games.

Pueblo’s Victoria Cazares had 26 points to the Warriors. She now has 1,134 career points as a junior.

TANQUE VERDE 62, SAFFORD 53 BOYS

Tanque Verde defeated Safford 62-53 to improve to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in the 3A South.

The Hawks were led by sophomore forward Eli Clausen’s 16 points, 12 coming in the second half. Senior forward Nick Wall had all 13 of his points in the first half.

PUSCH RIDGE 53, SABINO 24 GIRLS

Pusch Ridge defeated Sabino 53-42 in a 3A South game. The Lions are now 10-6 overall and 2-0 in region play while Sabino is 12-3 and 1-1.

Pusch Ridge 6-foot junior Molly Garnand finished with 32 points to lead the Lions and Sedona Dietrich finished with 10 points.

Sabino’s leading scorer was senior forward Emma Wall with 11 points.

DESERT CHRISTIAN 55, SAN MIGUEL 24 BOYS

Desert Christian defeated San Miguel 55-24 in a non-region game.

Desert Christian senior guard Rielly Joyal led the Eagles with 15 points. Desert Christian is 14-7 overall and 3-0 in the 1A Tucson.

BOOTH/FICKETT 18, OCHOA 8 (ELEMENTARY EXHIBITION)

Booth/Fickett held off Ochoa 18-8 to claim the inaugural Elementary Exhibition game.
