Salpointe girls in anticipated 4A semfinal game with visiting Seton Catholic

No. 2 Salpointe lost to Chandler Seton Catholic in the 4A state championship game last season and the teams will meet again this year in the postseason with the Lancers hosting the semifinal matchup Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Salpointe (22-4) defeated visiting Sahuaro 53-39 in a quarterfinal game Saturday night while No. 3 Seton Catholic (21-6) topped Paradise Honors 73-43 at home.

No. 1 seed Glendale Deer Valley was upset at home by No. 9 Phoenix Shadow Mountain 39-36 on Saturday.

Salpointe coach Joseph Luevano, in his second season, has a veteran team mixed with high-caliber freshmen in search of the school’s first state title. The Lancers finished as the runner-up last season and in the 2002-03 season under Pete Fajardo.

Salpointe is led by senior guard Kylee Callahan’s 17.0 points, 3.2 assists and 3.5 steals per game.

Taliyah Henderson, a Division I prospect as a freshman, is averaging 11.4 points and 4.9 rebounds. Fellow freshman Hannah Williams leads the Lancers with 5.2 rebounds a game.
