Arizona baseball heading to Miami’s Coral Gables (Fla.) Regional, facing Ole Miss in opener

Chip Hale will coach in his first NCAA tournament leading his alma mater Arizona in the Coral Gables (Fla.) Regional, where the Wildcats will open against Ole Miss, it was announced Monday morning during the selection show.

The legendary Wildcat infielder who was part of the 1986 national championship team has coached his first team to a 37-23 record.

Ole Miss (32-22) was eliminated by Arizona in three games in last year’s Super Regional at Hi Corbett Field. The Rebels and Wildcats are in the field as at-large teams.

Miami (39-18) is the No. 6 seed in the tournament is also participating as an at-large team after losing both games in last week’s ACC tournament.

Coral Gables Regional hosted by Miami (Florida) on Friday

  • No. 3 Ole Miss (32 – 22) vs. No. 2 Arizona (37 – 23), 4 p.m., ESPNU

Arizona has a history with host Miami in the NCAA tournament. The Wildcats played the Hurricanes in the College World Series in 1979, 1986 and 2016 (winning in 1979 and 2016) and in the Coral Gables Super Regional in 2008 (Wildcats lost two out of the three games).

Canisius (29-23) is the other team in the Coral Gables Regional. The Golden Griffins won the MAAC tournament championship to earn the automatic bid.

Arizona recently completed the inaugural Pac-12 tournament with a 2-2 record, losing to eventual champion Stanford twice after sweeping the Cardinal in three games in March at Hi Corbett Field.
