FC Tucson Women (1-0) will host El Paso Surf (0-1) this Friday night at the Kino North Stadium. The Women in Black beat El Paso 1-0 on the road to open up the 2022 season last Saturday and the two squads are set to play in the rematch this week at 7 p.m.

Ashly Martinez scored the lone goal in El Paso off a steal from Priscilla Pimienta in the 62nd minute of play. A youth national player from Mexico, Martinez already has quite a following on social media with almost 70,000 followers in Instagram (ashly.martinez26).

FC Tucson Women lead the Desert Conference with 3 points with three other members of the conference also starting play this weekend. SC del Sol (0-0) of Phoenix is hosting Atomic City FC (0-0) of Las Vegas at the Reach 11 Complex in Phoenix at 7 p.m. on Saturday and the inaugural Arizona Arsenal Soccer Club (0-0) of Mesa is hosting El Paso Surf at 7 p.m. at the Bell Bank Park.

FC Tucson Women head coach Kelly Pierce runs a program based on defense first and one of her main pieces on that line is former Morehead State standout Micaela Hornstein. Hornstein has doctorate in Physical Therapy, having completed her studies at the University of Indianapolis where she also served as an assistant coach.

Hornstein took some time off from the season last year to train for and compete in the Bigfoot Ultramarathon (40 Miles) and she came in with a time of 13:39:38 for 20th place on the high-elevation trial through the Cascade Mountains of Washington.
