Williamsport is the goal for every Little League team in the world and Marana took a step closer to the promised land with a come-from-behind 9-8 victory over Canyon View Wednesday night at the Ora Mae Harn District Park to win the District 5 Championship.

The 10-12 age group is the division attached to the Little League World Series and Marana will have to get through the State Tournament next which is slated to start on July 16 in Litchfield Park. The District 12 tournament is taking place at the Field of Dreams Complex in Tucson with seven teams still alive in the double-elimination bracket and six teams are battling it out in District 8 hosted by Nogales.
Marana went 4-1 in Majors action with the loss coming to Canyon View Tuesday night to set up the “If Game” Wednesday night. Canyon View (5-2) lost to CDO last Thursday and team from Mehl Park battled back through the Elimination Bracket with wins over Western, Oro Valley, CDO and Marana to force the final game.

Canyon View took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with Bobby Marquez coming through with a double. The team went up 6-0 in the third on RBIs from William Shoemaker and Noah Marks with Brody Lewis adding a two-run double. Down 6-0, Emmit Lee responded with a two-run shot in the bottom of the third and then Sophie Silverstein followed with a single and Jayson Veit came in and added a deep home run to cut the lead down to 6-4.
Greer Chanek shut down ten batters in a row. with eight strikeouts. to keep Canyon View off the scoreboard and the Marana batters responded with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run shot from Veit to put Marana up 7-6.
Canyon View needed to score in the sixth to avoid elimination and Seamus Sullivan got things started with a one-out walk and then Lukas Gerlach followed with a double to put two on. Shoemaker connected on a sacrifice fly to tie the game up with Luke Ardolino running for Sullivan. Gerlach scored on an error on the play, sliding under the tag at home, to give Canyon View an 8-7 lead.
Jordan Adams was hit-by-pitch to put the tying run on with no outs and Lee came up one out later with another two-run home run to give Marana the 9-8 victory. MJ Chavez got the start for Marana and Luke Lambert and Sullivan saw action on the mound for Canyon View.

In District 12 action from the Field of Dreams Complex. Sunnyside beat Southwestern on a walk-off hit from Enyelin Gonzalez to force an “If Game” in the 8-10 Softball Championship to be played Thursday night. The winner will advance to the State Tournament to be held in Sierra Vista starting on July 15.
