Tucson looks to lock up the three seed in the Western Conference Playoffs with a win against the Iowa Barnstormers in its final home game of the season tomorrow evening at Tucson Arena.
The Sugar Skulls are coming off a 53-47 road win over the San Diego Strike Force last Saturday night that clinched a playoff spot.
Tomorrow’s game marks the second time Tucson head coach and general manager Dixie Wooten will face his former team and the first time quarterback Daquan Neal will face Iowa in a Sugar Skulls uniform.
Iowa beat the Sugar Skulls 33-13 early last season in Tucson, led by then Barnstormers quarterback Neal.
Neal won the 2019 IFL MVP under Wooten in Iowa.
Wooten led the Barnstormers to an IFL Championship in 2018.
Don’t be surprised if you see lots of rushing by both teams tomorrow.
Tucson running back Mike Jones leads the IFL in touchdowns with 37, and his 650 rushing yards this season rank fifth in the league, three spots behind Iowa quarterback Darius Peterson who has 670 rushing yards.
If Tucson loses tomorrow, a loss by the Duke City Gladiators to the San Diego Strike Force will also clinch the third spot in the Western Conference Playoffs for the Sugar Skulls.
Both teams sit at 8-6 and third place in their respective conferences.
The Sugar Skulls recently signed former Arizona Wildcat linebacker Rashie Hodge Jr. for the remainder of the season.
Hodge played in all 12 games for the Wildcats in 2021 and recorded 11 total tackles, four tackles for loss, and 0.5 sacks.
The Sugar Skulls (8-6) play Saturday at Tucson Arena against the Iowa Barnstormers (8-6). Kickoff is at 6:05 p.m.
