Thornydale Juniors All-Stars standout Elizabeth Lujan went 4-for-4 with two triples, three runs and an RBI to lead her team to a 16-6 win in five innings Sunday over Goodyear in the second round of the winner’s bracket of the Arizona State Juniors Softball Tournament at Avondale.
Thornydale, 2-0 in the tournament, will next play Williams on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Williams defeated Sunnyside 10-8 on Sunday night.
Sunnyside goes to the elimination bracket, where it will play Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. against either Parker or Gilbert. Parker eliminated San Pedro Valley (Benson) by a score of 16-5 on Sunday.
Thornydale’s Rhiannon Plunkett went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs in the win over Goodyear. Lindsey Sanchez was 2 for 3 with a double, triple, three runs and two RBIs.
Five other players had two hits — Nayana Vandersloot, Kaylee Harper, Marie Hoeffner, Camila Quintero and Kaylee Moussette.
Thornydale tallied 21 hits and its defense was equally spectacular not committing an error.
Moussette was also the winning pitcher, going five innings, striking out nine, walking seven and scattering six hits.
In Sunnyside’s 10-8 loss to Williams, its rally in the seventh inning came up short after Williams scored six runs in the top of the inning.
The game was tied at 4 entering the seventh. After Williams took a 10-4 lead, Sunnyside answered with four runs but it wasn’t enough.
Sunnyside scored on an error, Camila Vargas hit an RBI double and Mayrani Muñoz belted a two-run home run in the seventh-inning rally.
Muñoz went 4-for-4 with three runs and five RBIs. She also hit two triples.
Sunnyside reliever Jae Moreno pitched 6 1/3 innings and struck out eight without allowing a walk.
