Sunnyside beat West Flagstaff 13-5 Tuesday night at Curtis Park to stay alive in the Arizona Junior League Elimination Bracket. Sunnyside (3-1) will face Mohave Valley (2-1) Wednesday night at Mehl Park in the next round.
Sunnyside beat Mohave Valley 15-14 on Saturday on a game where Mohave Valley led 13-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning before Sunnyside exploded for nine runs in the bottom half of that inning to change the momentum of the game.
In the game against West Flagstaff, Sunnyside built an early 5-0 lead and the bats kept coming with starting pitcher Mitzael Lopez holding West Flagstaff at bay with only one earned run given up. Lopez helped himself at the plate by going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI.
Omar Flores went 2-2 with 2 RBI, Angel Rodriguez went 2-2 and Jesus Luevanos had 4 RBI including a bases-clearing double to help out the game away in the top of the seventh inning. Tobyn Phillips went 2-2 with an RBI to lead West Flagstaff.
Lopez went the distance for Sunnyside while Caleb Begay, Jackson Clouse, Jace Adams and Phillips saw action on the mound for West Flagstaff. West Flagstaff finished 2-2 in the playoffs.
